Football is clearly the number one sport in the Congo, closely followed by handball. The country enjoyed great success in football between 1960 and 1980. To date, the national team, known as the Red Devils, has reached the finals of the African Cup of Nations on six occasions. They won the Gold medal in Yaoundé (Cameroon) in 1972, and also reached the semi-finals two years later in Egypt.
