Football is clearly the number one sport in Gabon. The national team has qualified for the finals of the African Cup of Nations on three occasions (1994, 1996, 2000), with the greatest success to date being the team's qualification for the quarter-finals in 1996. Gabon's U-20 team finished fifth at the CAF Youth Championship 2002 in Burkina Faso. The national association has introduced regional leagues at U-12 and U-15 level, as well as national tournaments for school's football. The U-17 national team often features in African championships, and at a tournament held in Montaigu in France. Although Gabonhave not enjoyed major success on the international stage, a number of players have been signed by foreign clubs, mainly in France. The most well known players are Shiva Nzigou (Nantes), Stéphane Nguéma (Stade Rennes) and Daniel Cousin (Le Mans).
Following completion of the technical centre, which was given priority as the country's first project, on 4 February 2008 the Goal Bureau approved the construction of headquarters to improve the working conditions of the staff of the Gabon football association. The cost of the project will be fully covered by the Goal Programme.
