Football has not yet taken root in Puerto Rico - in contrast to the other islands in the area - and ranks fifth in popularity after basketball, baseball, volleyball and professional boxing. However, Argentina and Brazil support a professional league which draws large crowds when Puerto Rico Islanders FC, who are based in the USA, play a match on the island. Alexis Rivera, once voted US Soccer League Player of the Year, used to play for this club. Women's football is being actively promoted and two leagues with ten clubs have already been set up. Apart from development work in these clubs, girls' football now features in the school curriculum. A futsal league with five national teams has also been set up.
The Goal Bureau was informed on 7 November 2005 of a training and school complex that was to be built in San Juan. This future House for Puerto Rican Foootball is intended to provide the best conditions for all categories of football to improve with the ultimate aim of breaking into the international scene. Funds for the ambitious project have not yet been decided but a contribution will be made from Goal.
