Football is struggling to make an impression on this tiny Pacific island. The influence of the USA has pushed basketball and American football into the top spots and they are hard to compete with. However, Guam can be proud of their achievements in women’s football. In 2001, they beat Singapore in a friendly match and Hong Kong in the qualifying round of the Asian confederation championships. In 2003, they won the silver medals at the South Pacific Games in Fiji.
The construction of an artificial turf pitch will turn the country’s football centre, which provides the infrastructure for administration and training and seminar activities as well as serving as a venue for matches and training sessions, into a “House of Football” in the truest sense of the term. The Goal Bureau approved this third project of the Guam Football Association on 2 June 2009. The all-weather pitch will improve Guam’s training facilities and enable its teams to play against teams from all over the world under conditions that meet the regulations.
